There is only one true pathology and way to tape the knee for sports. It is called McConnell taping and it is for lateral tracking of the patella. If the outside portion of the quadricep (vastus lateralis) overpowers the medial portion (vastus medialis) then your patella goes to the outside over the larger condyle of the femur. This is a painful grinding called chondromalacia patellae. If you have a problem with this talk to your doctor and see your athletic trainer or a physical therapist.
In terms of overall support, any wrap or tape you place around your knee has not been shown to be effective (not to mention restrictive). You may get a brace to provide medial and lateral support, but in terms of support for the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) 95% are torn with rotational stresses which there is no known support. Braces can be inhibiting during athletics so you may want to think about it.
