they’re used mainly so when you come down from jumping to hit/jump-serve/jump-set, you don’t roll your ankles.

to give you ankle support and to protect your ankle cause volleyball shoes don’t give ankle support.

so you don’t roll your ankle if you come down from jumping the wrong way, or if you jump and land on a volleyball. OUCH that would hurt!

As a volleyball player, i can tell you that braces help a lot! When hitting and blocking the ball you are up in the air, when you land sometimes your ankle can role or land awkward, thus the need for a brace. Many volleyball players have bad ankles and need braces for when they play.
